Dr. Bateman is a retired minister of the United Church of Christ. He attended college in
Tennessee, his native state, graduated from Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY and holds a graduate degree in education from
Indiana University.
Following seminary, he served as a mission pastor for five years and as an army chaplain for twenty-two
years. Following military retirement, he served both as a pastor and regional representative of the United Church of Christ.
He retired from full-time ministry in 1998 and served as a half-time pastor of a Presbyterian church in North Carolina.
Dr. Bateman lived in Uplands Retirement Village since 2003 and currently resides in Fairfield Glade
with his wife, Shirley. He has two married daughters and five grandchildren.
